Jenny Lewis @ Apollo Theater

A blurry pic of Sarah Silverman opened up the show with a great stand-up set!

Jenny Lewis and the band starting the show off with "Jack Killed Mom"

It was a great show with a nice mix of songs from Rabbit Fur Coat & Acid Tongue and I have to say, the songs from Acid Tongue (most of which I was seeing live for the first time tonight) came across very well, especially "The Next Messiah"! It was a a really nice show tonight and I had a lot of fun!

For those that missed the show, here's a version of Jenny & Jonathan's cover of "Love Hurts" from KUT:

The Random Mix Madness is back and it coincides with the birth of Chris' new site, Geek Monkey, which is fitting since it was discussions of his blog and mixes that prompted today's effort so without further ado, here's today's random mix from my iPod:

The most successful Family Slideshow band in history did not disappoint tonight! They were quirky, funny, & brilliant and once again delivered a great set and left me definitely wanting more. They are 100% worth showing up early for and they have a bunch of cool merch that you should check out if you go see one of the shows as it's not available anywhere else!

Kate Nash:

"Model Behaviour"... which I like even more now that she shared the story about how she came to write it!!!!

"Merry Happy"

Other songs from the set: "Shit Song", "Nicest Thing", & "Dickhead"... there may have been others that I missed but I'm pretty sure that's close to everything at this point.

I had such a blast tonight! Unfortunately I missed Kate Nash last time she came through town (another casualty of emplyoment! LOL) and if I hadn't, it's possible I wouldn't have been so surprised by the set tonight but I loved the new songs and I really liked the new arrangements of some of the tracks that rocked with the band behind her! She definitely seems confident on stage, whether sitting at the keyboard, playing a guitar (acoustic & electric!), or just singing her heart out and even in a larger venue she still manages to connect with the crowd and the passion and emotion behind her songs is sitll clearly evident! I can't wait for her next album and I doubt I need to tell you but just in case, try to catch her now because I imagine the next time she comes to NYC she'll be playing to even larger crowds!

In the meantime, drop by her Myspace to check out one of the new tracks, "Model Behaviour" and if you haven't already done it, pick up a copy of her album, Made Of Bricks... you will not be disappointed!

Clare & The Reasons @ Mercury Lounge

Clare & The Reasons and Jaymay @ Mercury Lounge:

Jaymay:

It's Jaymay playing some ditties!!!

"Autumn Fallin'" with the band

"Blue Skies"!!!!!!!!

"One May Die So Lonely"

GOB (aka "Gray Or Blue" LOL)

Once again, Jaymay delivered a terrific set and this time with a band accompanying her on a few tracks. It was a lot of fun catching the couple of little ditties she started off with, hearing "You Are Lookin' Old" for the first time, and I was really jazzed to hear "Blue Skies", my favorite track from her new album, Autumn Fallin', live. If you haven't already done it, go out and pick up Autumn Fallin' and in case you need some convincing, check out "Autumn Fallin'" below!

Clare & The Reasons:

Clare & The Reasons

"Pluto"

"Rodi"

"Alphabet City"

Covering Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"

"Why Why Why" (?)

I wasn't sure how the orchestrations and depth of Clare & The Reasons' tracks from their album The Movie would come across live but wow, they were great, even though they were one bass player short since he was stuck in a plane somewhere (I'm guessing NYC rain delays, what do you think? LOL). The songs have a terrific feel and Clare & the band have a nice dynamic that works well with the songs. I loved the blinking headlamps that made the stage look like a starry night sky during "Pluton", the Tears For Fears cover was top notch, and the duet between Clare & and her husband Olivier (filling in for the absent Alan) at the end was very cute and a very nice way to end their set.

Check out "Rodi" from Clare & The Reasons' album The Movie below and if you like it pick it up, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed!
